Why vascular diseases must be treated

When the venous system is functioning properly, blood flows in only one direction, i.e. toward the heart. Valves in the veins prevent blood from flowing backwards. However, sometimes valves stop working correctly - valve flaps do not close tightly and a gap forms, which slows the flow of blood. This creates additional pressure on the venous walls and the veins begin to stretch. Over time the problem grows worse.

Phlebology

Key reasons for treating vein disorders:

  • weakened vein walls will not improve on their own;
  • conservative treatments and folk remedies may temporarily relieve symptoms but will not eradicate the problem;
  • without proper treatment, serious complications may arise, including trophic ulcers and thromboembolism.

Modern phlebology offers a wide range of minimally-invasive treatment methods which allow doctors to eliminate vein diseases without radical surgery. Innovative techniques do not require incisions, stitches, general anesthesia or extended hospital stays.

When to see a doctor

Vascular disorders can be very tricky. We have seen cases where a patient was complaining of tightness in the legs, and only after an examination did doctors discover varicose veins that required serious treatment. This is why you should watch out for signs that could indicate a vascular disease:

  • legs get tired quickly;
  • pain, heaviness or "buzzing" sensation in the legs;
  • swelling of the legs;
  • throbbing feeling in the blood vessels of the extremities;
  • itching, burning of the skin of the legs and feet;
  • calf muscle cramps, especially at night;
  • growth of vascular patterns (stars, threads) on the skin;
  • the formation of foci of hyperpigmentation, skin atrophy;
  • convoluted blood vessels protruding above the skin surface;
  • poorly healing wounds and ulcers.

In many cases, what we can see with our bare eyes does not reflect the full situation with vascular health; visible symptoms like spider veins can be just the tip of the iceberg of a bigger vein problem. So if you have any of these symptoms, do not ignore them or postpone a consultation with a specialist. You can sign up today for a visit with a GMS Hospital phlebologist by phone or with our online form.
